NPR Fan Girl's First Donation and What's Coming Next
Our first donation to the Western Iowa Journalism Foundation and what to look out for from NPR Fan Girl.
NPR Fan Girl had been an idea percolating in my frontal cortex for over half of a year, but the documentary Storm Lake, which is now available to stream through the PBS Independent Lens Series, spurred me into action.
The mission of NPR Fan Girl is to promote, preserve, and [financially] support all types of journalistic efforts, from community papers, to nonprofit digital outlets, to radio programs, and everything in between. Substack seemed to be the best platform to execute this mission because of its paid subscription model and popularity. Since writing my first post on November 8, 17 people have joined the email list, generating roughly $42.50 in monthly readership fees. Until NPR Fan Girl reaches $100 per month in monthly readership dues, I have committed to matching up to $100 of my own money to ensure that our contributions can make a greater impact.
I’m happy to report that our first donation totaled $85 to the Western Iowa Journalism Foundation. Though this may seem modest, it still matters. It matters that those of you reading this are invested enough to dedicate your time, let alone your money, to lend your ears and eyes to journalism. We’re all better off for it.
